International firm focuses on supporting Cumbrian businesses
Local business is booming for international engineering company NT Precision. The Cockermouth based precision engineering company has seen a dramatic increase in demand from local businesses in the last twelve months and they have been working with the West Cumbria Supply Chain Network to ensure other Cumbrian companies are aware of the skills available in our area.
When NT Precision began 7 years ago, almost 95% of their work came from international orders from a variety of countries such as the USA, Germany, France, Sweden, Austria, Czech Republic and India. Much of this work was for the manufacture of tooling equipment used in the automotive industry, but it was 2006 that saw a significant increase in demand from local companies with 28% of last years turnover being generated in the region.
Engineering Director, Alan Ashcroft commented that “when we set up the business in Cumbria we knew ‘potential customers’ were having difficultly finding a local company that offered a complete service for engineering design and manufacture. This gap in the market provided us with some great opportunities and has led to the design and manufacture of a very diverse range of products!”
Based at the Derwent Mills Commercial Park in Cockermouth, NT Precision has supported other companies on the site. They were approached by Planet Knox, manufacturers of impact protection systems, to manufacture tooling that made it easier to produce their protective body armour. The collaboration resulted in an improved finish for the components which were also produced more quickly and at less cost.
For the Cumberland Pencil Company, who are now moving to Lillyhall, NT Precision took two pre-war piece’s of machinery and changed their purpose to create two high speed burnisher’s for their pencil’s. The result was a much smoother pencil created from a faster process. Mr Clive Farrar said “we were delighted with the quality and service and hope to use them again when we eventually move the Derwent Brand into our new site at Lillyhall.”
Mike Norris, Managing Director added “our international clients provide us with larger, but less frequent projects, so it is very reassuring to know we are gaining such varied business from our own region. Projects range from one extreme to another; we have made tooling equipment for local pencil manufacturers, machines for our neighbours James Walker Ltd and have contract machined 3,000 components for another local customer.”
Support in Cumbria for specialist companies like NT Precision has grown, and as the demand during the last twelve months has shown, the potential to keep specialist contracts in the region is better for the Cumbrian economy.
The West Cumbria Supply Chain Network and Business Link have been keen to work with NT Precision and have provided marketing support to increase the awareness of what they can offer. “NT Precision’s recently launched website aims to appeal to local and international trade, so not only do they plan to keep business within the county, they will also be bringing more international trade to the local economy too” said Bill Walker, Project Manager for the Supply Chain Network.
NT Precision can be contacted on 01900 828 965 or you can visit their website at www.ntprecision.co.uk
