Wind farm developer courts Cumbrian business
DELEGATES from Cumbrian businesses, representing companies employing over 14,000 people, attended a Supply Opportunities Event for the proposed Fleeter Wood Wind Farm last week (Friday 29 February).
The event, held at West Cumbria House on the Lillyhall Business Park, was organised by West Cumbria Development Agency, Envirolink Northwest and renewable energy company, Novera Energy plc.
Novera Energy Project Director Susannah Side said: "We were extremely pleased with the event, which attracted Cumbrian businesses interested in working on the proposed Fleeter Wood Wind Farm. If this project is granted planning consent, it will result in approximately £3.6 million worth of construction contracts which local businesses will be able to bid for.
Novera already employs staff managing our £260,000 investment in various local renewable energy schemes, including a hydro and landfill site, and we welcome the opportunity to extend this investment further and for Cumbrian businesses to benefit from this increased investment.”
The event focused on informing Cumbrian businesses about the contract opportunities that would be available as a result of the development. All companies attending the event have been registered on a database and will be kept up to date as the project progresses through the planning process.
Novera is proposing to develop a 5-turbine wind farm on farm land 5.5 km east-southeast of Maryport, between Dearham, Dovenby and Tallentire. A planning application was submitted to Allerdale Borough Council at the end of last year.
Project Director Susannah Side added: “The event enabled us to find out what skills and services are available locally, and gave businesses and potential contractors a chance to discover more about the project. Those who attended were enthusiastic about the benefits that the project will bring, including contract opportunities. I would like to thank West Cumbria Development Agency and Envirolink Northwest for helping to organise such a successful event."
WCDA Chief Executive Dog Holden commented: “We are grateful to Novera Energy for its keenness to engage with our local companies. We are working on a major project to help West Cumbria’s companies find opportunities outside the nuclear sector. Renewable energy is a huge market and fits well with West Cumbria’s ‘Energy Coast’ brand.”

Meet the Buyer - Local Companies Set Sights On Global Horizons
At the latest Meet the Buyer seminar and exhibition, held at Sellafield Visitor Centre on 14 November, over 75 local contractors set their sights on fulfilling decommissioning contracts, not only at Sellafield but also further afield.
Thirteen Tier 2 contractors explained the projects on which they are working and outlined the types of services they needed.
The event was organised as part of the North West Nuclear Supply Chain Support project, led by TWI and delivered in West Cumbria by the West Cumbria Development Agency (WCDA).
Addressing local company representatives, Sellafield’s Commercial Director Steve Morgan said: “The world is undergoing a nuclear renaissance and we are at the forefront of that revival. I welcome this event which will help companies within our supply chain think globally. They need to forge alliances and partnerships with their sights set, not only for work at Sellafield, but around the world. The international market for the nuclear industry runs into tens of billions of pounds.”
